Found Sound China kicked off on July 1, 2018 with a week-long residency at Lijiang Studio (a stunning rural site in Yunnan Province), during which producers met one another and exchanged techniques in sound collection, mobile recording, and digital music production.

After this initial residency, Chinese and American producers traveled in pairs for two weeks through separate regions of China, traversing both rural and urban settings. Each pair used mobile recording rigs to record whatever sounds they found most compelling: traditional instruments, nature sounds, car horns, folk operas, prayer bells, freestyles in the local dialect, and more.

These intrepid producers then reconvened in Beijing for five days, where they mixed, exchanged, remixed, and mastered their tracks, presented a series of performances, and compiled the music into an album that was released through partner outlets in both China and the U.S.

Found Sound China brought together six American and Chinese music producers for a month of sound collection and collaborative music production in rural China and beyond. As hip-hop and electronic music started to experience unprecedented popularity in China, Found Sound China sought to promote a DIY music production aesthetic inspired by creative traditions ranging from hip-hop to experimental sound art.
