In 2021, Found Sound Nation launched the Found Sound Mexico (FSM) initiative, convening 5 emerging Mexican leaders in the field of music as social practice who engage marginalized youth in the process of collaborative music creativity. The program was led by FSN's Jeremy Thal, composer/producer/vocalist Ana Lopez, and percussionist/organizer Jerónimo Zoe.
FSN Mexico had four interwoven goals: 1) To build capacity among musicians and organizations that are working directly with vulnerable youth populations in Mexico; 2) To develop long-lasting connections between artists and community arts organizations across Mexico; 3) To develop best practices in the field of socially engaged music practice that can be shared across the Americas, and; 4) To support the economic security of young professional musicians, many of whom had lost their main sources of performance income during the lockdown.
This rich and inspiring two-month program culminated with virtual and in-person performances in Mexico City that showcased the works that fellows had produced over the course of the program.
Found Sound Mexico was a program aimed at empowering Mexican leaders in the filed of music as social practice in the process of collaborative music creation. Consisting of workshops, masterclasses, and creative sessions, FSN Mexico participants developed and shared innovative strategies that empower young people to make their own original music.
