PARTNERS

Snétberger Talent Centre

In August 2014, Street Studio Hungary brought together Roma youth from the Snétberger Talent Centre, Hungarian singer-songwriter Vera Jonas, and producers from the New York-based non-profit Found Sound Nation to engage communities in the collaborative creation of music in public squares, universities, and music festivals across Hungary.

The project began with a series of workshops, during which the Snétberger students learned FSN's "Street Studio" model, which invites people from all walks of life, regardless of age, origin, experience, or ethnicity, to join in the process of spontaneous music production, driven by a simple but powerful mobile recording setup. These workshops offered the Roma students, many of whom come from underserved communities around Hungary, an opportunity to deepen their skills as producers, recording engineers, and musical facilitators, before embarking on a short tour to three cities in Hungary to lead street studio sessions in public squares.

After four days of workshops, the group then spent five days traveling to cities in Hungary recording and remixing the sound, talent, and spirit of those particular places and moments, and connecting with passersby. The aim of Street Studio Hungary was to amplify and celebrate the diversity of cultures present in Hungary, developing a hyper-local approach to music production which fueled culturally-driven economic growth and cross-cultural understanding.

Street Studio Hungary was a series of workshops and mobile street studios that engaged young Roma musicians and producers in activating public squares across Hungary through musical co-creation.
